Centro Celebrates 10th Anniversary, Amigos Change Uniforms

Centro 10th Anniversary

Centro San Antonio Amigos celebrate 10 years of the public improvement district in downtown San Antonio, marking anniversary with new look

The Centro San Antonio Amigos turn ten in January, a special anniversary that celebrates a decade of service improving downtown through the Ambassador, Maintenance, and Streetscaping programs.

To help mark the milestone, the Amigos will be trading in their token “teal” shirts for gold ones that will include the refreshed Centro logo. The new uniforms will enable the Amigos to be more visable for those needing their services. The color of the uniforms is only a surface change compared to the many measurable changes Centro has made over the last ten years:
In the first five years, Amigos served over 1 million guests and residents; in the past five years that number has nearly quadrupled to 4 million.

· In the just the last five years, Amigos have:
  • Answered over 5,000 calls regarding VIA routes and info
  • Removed nearly half a million chewing gum spots from downtown sidewalks
  • Collected more than a million pounds of trash
  • Eliminated over 40,000 graffiti tags and stickers
  • Planted and maintained 25,000 potted plants to beautify the city
  • The service area has been extended to include the historic Market Square District
  •  In October 2009, Centro entered into a new contract with Block by Block, a third-party company that brings a host of best practices to San Antonio with their experience serving 35 other public improvement districts across the country.

To celebrate the past decade of progress and welcome the next ten years, Centro has several festivities planned including a birthday party and press conference later in January, the repainting of the Cow Parade Amoogo to reflect the new uniform, a roll out of a “virtual Amigo” on Twitter, an Amigo scavenger hunt, and the reinstatement of the popular “Ask An Amigo” column. Additionally, Centro has been honored with Fiesta Magazine’s cover article in the January 2010 edition, “Ambassadors of the Alamo City: The Face of downtown celebrates 10th Anniversary.”
