In
celebration of National Tourism Week, The Palm San Antonio will host the Centro
San Antonio Amigos for lunch in appreciation of their dedication to making
downtown a friendly destination for guests from near and far. While the Amigos are
invited to dine al fresco, they will be looked over by not only The Palm’s
attentive staff but the smiling “faces” of San Antonio’s leading businessmen,
politicians and celebrities whose caricatures line the restaurant’s famed
walls. Often called “the face of San
Antonio,” themselves, the workforce of more than 65
Amigos provide a host of services that improve downtown through the Ambassador,
Streetscaping, and Maintenance programs.
General
Manager of The Palm San Antonio, Jon Edwards, explained, “Who better to acknowledge during National Tourism Week
than the Amigos of Centro San Antonio. These ambassadors of San Antonio
welcome visitors from all over the world, keep our downtown streets clean and safe
and give all of us who live and work downtown one more reason to be proud citizens
of San Antonio!”
Launched in
2000, Centro SA recently celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the
Amigos program this past January. To help mark the milestone, the Amigos traded
in their token “teal” shirts for gold ones that include the refreshed Centro
logo. The color of the uniforms is only a surface change compared to the many measurable
changes Centro has made over the last decade: In the first five years, Amigos
served over 1 million guests and residents; in the past five years that number
has nearly quadrupled to over 4 million.
Additionally, in the just the last five years, Amigos have:
-
Answered over 5,000 calls regarding VIA routes
and info
- Removed nearly half a million chewing gum spots
from downtown sidewalks
- Collected more than a million pounds of trash
- Eliminated over 40,000 graffiti tags and stickers
- Planted and maintained 25,000 potted plants to
beautify the city
- The service area has recently been extended to
include the historic Market Square District
- In October 2009, Centro entered into a new
contract with Block by Block, a third-party contractor that brings a host
of best practices to San Antonio with their experience serving 35 other
public improvement districts across the country.
While The Palm San Antonio and Centro
San Antonio celebrate National Tourism week locally, National Tourism Week is a
collective effort across the U.S.
to celebrate the cultural and social benefits created by travel and
tourism. In San Antonio, travel and tourism
has an estimated economic impact of $11 billion annually. It employs
roughly 100,000 people and brings 25 million people a year to San
Antonio. This year we celebrate the people on the frontlines that
make it happen. See below for events, discounts, and award nominations.
