"Decade of Downtown" need not end with Castro's exit

As we consider the impact of Mayor Julián Castro's departure to become secretary of HUD, let's not view his move to Washington as a falling domino that spells doom for the decade of downtown. Instead, look at it for what it really is; a symbol of the inevitable winds of change that will always swirl across the political landscape.

Yes, Mayor Castro's move east will lead to change at City Hall and throughout the political system. We will have a new mayor, or two, within the space of a year. Seats on the council will become available. And politicians previously seen strolling the halls of the statehouse may swap places with those working the corridors of City Hall.

Walking and Working Downtown with a San Antonio Saint

Downtown was bustling after dark on the first Monday after Thanksgiving. The H-E-B Christmas Tree in Alamo Plaza was draped in red, white a blue, a more contemporary decoration than  the traditional oversized tree ornaments. The River Walk was aglow with more lights and bustling with locals and visitors.

I was working that night  as an Ambassador Amigo for Centro San Antonio, walking the downtown streets as part of this city’s 13-year-old “clean and safe” program.

Urban Renaissance Luncheon - A program of Centro San Antonio

Renowned preservation economist Don Rypkema will share his insights on the importance of historic preservation in the life and economy of San Antonio.  Followed by developer Dennis McDaniel's story of transforming a former warehouse into the award winning Steel House Lofts Condominiums.

For this exciting discussion, a special printing of the 2015 "Historic Preservation in the Life and the Economy of San Antonio" report will be produced and distributed to all luncheon attendees.
