A team from Project for Public Spaces, the New York-based urban planner, will share its ideas for how to reinvigorate Travis Park at a public meeting 6 p.m. Thursday at the St. Anthony Hotel. The Center City Development Office contracted with PPS ($49,600) to draft a plan. The scale and scope of the plan is unclear because city staff have yet to view them. But placemaking is all about finding quick and inexpensive ways to liven up public spaces. In other words, PPS is not drafting something on the scale of HemsiFair Park.
Centro Partnership, the nonprofit group the city of San Antonio created to lead the downtown revitalization effort, will likely gain its first stream of public money. On May 30, the City Council is expected to approve a 10-year renewal of the public improvement district (PID) for downtown. A renewal means an increase in the amount of money property owners are assessed based on property values, of which Centro will tap in to.
