Studies addressing grocery store, student housing

The hot downtown discussion was the grocery store — when, where, etc. — but it seems to have been replaced by the creation of more housing units in the urban core, and the city's role in assisting such development. The city has commissioned a pair of exploratory studies on both these topics.

Express-News: Chamber's economic conference focuses on growth

San Antonio wasn't unscathed by the recession, and local business leaders are trying to position the city for the recovery. Analysts at the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce's Economic Outlook Conference on Tuesday focused on areas of potential growth. And the chamber's new quarterly economic outlook report, released Tuesday, said that while local job growth has been anemic, that could turn around starting in the fall. Read full article

Express-News: Can do spirit prevails at East Side Development Meeting

During his introductory remarks at Saturday's East Side Development Reinvestment Summit, County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson bemoaned the fact that nothing had been done to prevent a huge pile of trash from accumulating on the corner of Cherry and Iowa Streets.

Six hours later, Councilwoman Ivy Taylor closed out the summit by announcing that the trash pile had been picked up. Adkisson, seated at a table in the back of Sam Houston High School's auditorium, lifted his arms in celebration.

Taylor and Mayor Julián Castro, the organizers of the summit, noted Saturday that true change on the economically challenged East Side won't happen in a day, but the trash-pickup story gave a hint of the summit's sense of possibility.
