2010 Downtowner of the Year announced: Mayor Julian Castro

BEST AWARDS’ JURY NAMES MAYOR JULIAN CASTRO DOWNTOWNER OF THE YEAR

SAN ANTONIO — The 2010 Downtown’s BEST Awards Jury met this past week to deliberate over a record number of nominations for Downtown Alliance’s 10th Annual BEST Awards, which recognize the people, places, and events that represent the BEST of downtown San Antonio. While the rest of this year’s award winners won’t be revealed until the April 9 awards luncheon, the Awards Jury is pleased to announce the name of the 2010 Downtowner of the Year: Mayor Julián Castro.

Downtown Alliance President Ben Brewer commented, “We are quite honored to celebrate Mayor Castro as Downtowner of the Year. Shortly after taking office, Mayor Castro declared this the “decade of downtown” at the Annual Meeting of Downtown Alliance, and has been following through ever since with collaborative leadership to usher in a series of initiatives that will help revitalize the urban core of San Antonio.”

The Mayor’s initiatives include the creation of HemisFair Park Area Redevelopment Local Government Corporation, championing the creation of the Centro Partnership San Antonio, the heralding of a series of inner city revitalization incentives, the initiation and completion of the East Side redevelopment summits, and contribution to the completion of the Haven for Hope campus on the near West Side of downtown.

Winners of the 10th Annual Awards program, including the Mayor, will receive their awards at the April 9 luncheon at the Westin Riverwalk. The luncheon ceremony includes a multi-media presentation of this year’s nominees and winners, and a special tribute to the BEST highlights from the past ten years. Brewer remarked, “This is one of our members’ favorite programs because you get a sense of the great accomplishments, future plans, and sense of community that is unique to downtown.” Tables and individual tickets can be purchased online at http:/www.downtownsa.org/best through Friday April 2, 2010.
