The Downtown Owners Association was established in 1982 by a group of property owners who recognized the need for an organized group to protect their interests in downtown San Antonio. DTOA was a principle partner with the City of San Antonio and VIA in the TriParty Project streetscape improvements, and created a public improvement district to pay for the private property owners' participation in the successful effort.
In 1994, the membership restructured the organization, broadening their involvement and the categories of membership to become the Downtown Alliance.
Today, DTA is composed of major property and business owners in the downtown area, and others who also are committed to downtown's revitalization.
The Downtown Alliance works to protect and enhance the values and usage of downtown properties and businesses, making downtown an exciting place to live, work, shop and play.

Initiated in 1998, this quarterly luncheon series features presentations from the most successful downtown revitalization programs in the country. Speakers dialogue a variety of topics such as transit and transportation impacts, living, working and transforming downtown. With a renewed focus on the urban environment issues like art in public spaces, safety and reenergizing the city center are discussed. Each year a special focus is made on San Antonio with a luncheon titled State of Downtown, where innovative individuals will give an update of projects, statistics and predictions of where downtown is heading. It is a goal of Urban Renaissance series to engage, inform and inspire downtown San Antonio to excellence.
Created six years ago, Downtown Alliance Urban Spaces Tour showcases some of the citys most unique spaces. This walking tour gives participants a sneak peek in the way which Downtowners work, live and play. Designed to discover hidden downtown gems, it weaves our urban components together which is at the core of the DTA mission. Urban Spaces offers a multi-dimensional view of the city center with each year focusing on a different area, neighborhood, or street in downtown. Past tours have included private residences, remolded spaces and renovated and rejuvenated neighborhoods and businesses.
Whos the BEST? We are! There will always be cause to herald those who make our unique center city a better place to live, work, shop and be entertained! Each year, we recognize our peers who make a significant contribution to downtown via the "Downtown's BEST" Awards. Initiated in 2001, the awards are divided among multiple categories that celebrate people, organizations and places that have made significant contributions to Downtown San Antonio. The BEST Awards Program is a juried event and awards are presented at an annual luncheon program and serves as our annual fundraiser.

Centro San Antonio helps accommodate downtown's growing residential population, enhance its office and retail market, and position downtown as a premier convention and visitor destination through the efforts of the Public Improvement District.
In 2000, Centro San Antonio Management Corporation launched Centro San Antonio-The Downtown Public Improvement District to provide services and improvements as a supplement to services provided by the City of San Antonio. These services are in the form of Ambassador Amigos, Maintenance Amigos, and Streetscaping Amigos.
Centro San Antonio Ambassadors Amigos, Streetscaping Amigos and Maintenance Amigos offer support to a variety of programs, businesses and residences of downtown. Centro holds a strong presence each month at the Houston Street Fair and Market by assisting with set-up and clean-up as well as hosting an information booth and each month an Amigo dresses like a clown and hands out free balloons to children at the fair.
Centro assists city programs like Luminaria and Fresh Air Friday with set-up and clean-up as well as offered support during the event by sharing information with participants and passing out promotional materials. Ambassador Amigos offer tour guide assistance to visiting groups and are supporting tours of the new Museum Reach of the River. One of Centros favorite events to participate in is the Fiesta Flambo Parade and each year the Amigos build a float unique to the ideas of Centro and Downtown.
This year Centro San Antonio held a food drive which resulted in a collection of over 150 tons of food which was delivered to the Food Bank of San Antonio. Part of Centro San Antonios mission is to offer support to programs in downtown and to give back to the community
Ambassador Amigos play an important role in the District. These Amigos serve as goodwill ambassadors in assisting downtown's various users. Their high visibility positions them to be proactive in assisting downtown conventioneers, visitors, workers, residents, and downtowns various law enforcement officials.
Equipped with two-way radios and local area knowledge, these uniformed Ambassadors are strategically situated throughout the District and in high-pedestrian traffic areas at key times of the day. They form a unique partnership with local authorities providing maximum assistance and safety throughout the District, thereby supporting overall crime prevention.
Our Ambassador Amigos are available to serve as safety escorts, they assist stranded motorists and pedestrians, and they are qualified to provide first aid assistance until professional help arrives. Additionally, the Ambassadors act as information guides for the public. They are in-the-know with regard to what's going on around downtown San Antonio. They are also available for directions to promotional events and downtown attractions.
Streetscaping Amigos provide planters and plant materials to help "soften" downtown's public right-of-ways. Taking a cue from the River Walk, these improvements help enhance the pedestrian experience for our many downtown workers, residents, and visitors:
* The District has added over 600 planters on light poles, on stair rails between street level and the River Walk, and in clusters of large planters throughout the District.
* The Streetscaping Amigos also use a "Tiger Truck" to assist them in watering and maintaining the Districts planters.
* Additonal planter clusters have been added to Alamo Plaza, paid for by private donors and maintained by the Streetscaping Amigos. Centro SA will continue to seek sponsorships like this for various locations around the District.
In the future, the District will also explore the possible addition of street furniture such as benches, trash receptacles and directional signage at key locations. The District is responsible for maintaining any physical improvements that it provides. This includes watering, fertilization and replacing seasonal vegetation as necessary. The Streetscaping Amigos program intends to expand in scope each year, as funds are available.
Our Maintenance Amigos perform services 7 days a week, 365 days a year Again, these maintenance services provided by the PID are NOT intended to replace those furnished by the City. They reinforce the City's services resulting in additional attention being paid to downtown's overall appearance.
The Maintenance Amigos, like the Ambassador Amigos, are uniformed and carry radios enabling them to be in constant communication with the District office and nearby Public Service Representatives.
To assist the Maintenance Amigos in their daily duties, the Public Improvement District employs the use of a "Tiger Truck." This small four-wheeled vehicle and trailer is used for trash pick-up, power-washing, and general monitoring of maintenance services.
The District also uses specially designed rolling trash bins and two colorful riding sidewalk sweepers to help in the Districts maintenance.
The Maintenance Amigos supplement the City's efforts by performing sidewalk cleaning, graffiti abatement, trash pickup, power-washing and weed removal. Our downtown often needs nothing more than a regular cleaning in order to maintain its appeal.
The Centro Mobile Information Kiosk provides information about local attractions and events, as well as being a wi-fi hub and a mobile device charging station.
